Urushi Ware is made waterproof by applying lacquer to wood, and is resilient and has a natural insulating effect. The wares made this way can be made to last a long time by reapplying the layers of lacquer as they naturally wear down. In order to pass on this knowledge of both the benefits and the craft itself to future generations, we discovered ways to innovate the tradition with local craftsmen.

破損しにくく、天然の断熱効果を持つ木材に漆を塗ることで防水性を持つ漆器は、塗り直すことでより長持ちします。自然由来の素材・漆の幅広い効果と繊細な技術を後世に継承するために、地方の工芸職人とともに漆工の新しい表現を見出しました。

Four colors(Six colors included base colors) have been customized and developed for tefutefu, representing Japan’s ever-changing scenery during the four seasons. It was a formidable challenge to be able to reproduce the color of the pigment with the appropriate viscosity from the natural color of lacquer, which oxidizes and quickly turns brown when exposed to air.

日本が誇る美しい四季の風景からtefutefuならではの4色(下地を含め6色)を再現しました。空気に触れると酸化して褐色になる漆本来の色に対して、顔料を使用し表現したい色彩に調色することは簡単なことではなく、黒と赤を主流とする伝統への挑戦でもありました。

Karesansui, which is a formation of sand, moss, and rocks without using bodies of water, embodies the Zen philosophy of bringing a state of meditation and serenity. SUITŌ made to scale based on the body, and adopts the Yamato ratio (also known as the “silver ratio”) which is specifically familiar to Japanese people. The scale is reflected in Horyuji Kondo, Ise Jingu, and Moronobu Hishikawa’s painting Mikaeri Bijin Zu.

池や水を使わず砂・苔・岩で形成された枯山水は、瞑想状態や安寧をもたらす禅の思想を体現しています。SUITŌは身体を基準とした尺寸法でつくられ、法隆寺金堂や伊勢神宮、菱川師宣の絵画『見返り美人図』などにも見られ、日本人に親しまれている比率“大和比（白銀比）”を採用しました。

As the natural scenery changes with the seasons, the lacquer changes color with use. SUITŌ has four color transitions to reflect the seasons: spring to summer, summer to autumn, autumn to winter, and winter to spring. Because the appearance changes depending on the owner’s environment and usage, the vessel develops its own history and becomes truly reflective of the person who owns it.

季節によって景色が変化するように、使い続けるうちに色漆に変化が訪れます。SUITŌには春から夏、夏から秋、秋から冬、冬から春という４タイプの色表現が施されており、使い続けるうちにそれぞれ違った組み合わせの色が浮き出てきます。持ち主の環境や使い方によって模様の現れかたが変わるため、自分とともに歩んだ時間が刻まれた世界に一つしかない漆器としてより深く馴染んでいきます。

The paulownia wood box, which has been used since ancient times in Japan to store important items, is ideal for storing SUITŌ urushi ware. The furoshiki cloth, which gently wraps the SUITŌ inside the paulownia wood box and is also suitable for carrying, is carefully dyed by hand using scrap wood from the trees that were cut down to regenerate the urushi trees. Focusing on the urushi plant, we hope to pass on to the next generation the beauty and comfort of a life spent with quality products.

日本古来から大切なものを保管するために使われてきた桐材の箱は、漆器であるSUITŌの保管に最適です。桐箱の中でSUITŌを優しく包み、また持ち運びにも適した風呂敷は、漆の木を再生させるために伐採された廃材を使用し、手染めにより丁寧に染め上げています。私たちは漆という植物に焦点を当て、良質なものとともに過ごす暮らしの美しさや心地よさを次世代に受け継いでいきたいと考えています。
